For about 2 years I have been developing my own 3D virtual world based on many different platforms. I have looked at Panda 3D, Ogre, Multiverse Torque and Second Life.

When Second Life opened their viewer to the public domain, they changed all the rules. Very smart people took that viewer and began to reverse engineer it and have come up with a beautiful project called "OpenSim" It reminds me a lot of the effort that was put into Firefox and Apache as the people behind it know they have something very special that will one day change the net forever.

People are beginning to use the parts created in OpenSim and apply them to solving problems we have encountered through our years of glacial progress in Second Life. Solutions are being discovered at a dizzying pace and new grids are going up to service. New ideas and business ventures are coalescing around solving problems that Linden Labs has discovered yet.

One of the best efforts to date is "OpenLifeGrid", a creation of Steve Sima (aka Sakai OpenLife). consisting of 158 regions and growing, he is partnered with other companies that are adding new features and stability to what will be the next paradigm shift of the internet. They are making progress at an incredible rate toward making OpenLifeGrid a perfectly viable alternative to Second Life. Over half of the functions of Linden Labs proprietary language LSL have been duplicated and the have made considerable progress at delivering a .NET Scripting engine solution that will allow users to write script in alternative languages - BEFORE Linden Labs.

In other areas, OpenLifeGrid has partnered with RealXtend, a company that is bringing a new avatar management system, mesh importation, grid to grid teleportation, enhanced media directly viewable on surfaces, and prims that are 10 times as large as offered in Second Life.

This is by far the BEST and more organized effort towards changing the Internet as we know it. I proudly throw my support into OpenLifeGrid and I am very proud to be one of its founding members.
