What is the Free Community Region Program?   (Australia)

Free Hosted Region Program

What is it? OpenlifeGrid will provide a free region (not just a gridspace) on the OpenlifeGrid for approved projects that meet the following criteria.

The project be:
1. Community minded Project (Openlife and exterior).
2. Be an Active Participant in the OpenlifeGrid.
3. Considerate of these factors Promote participation OpenlifeGrid/ Showcase etc Interaction.

If you would like to participate in the program please feel free to start a new post with your idea for discussion with other members or contact the OpenlifeGrid through the details on our contact page.
(Approval the discretion of the OpenlifeGrid Administrators).

Just to Clarify the Free Region Program is not just a GRID square it is a running actual Region on our Simulators. Available in-world (Openlife GRID) with public access.
Of course this means you will have building rights to construct and design the region according to the proposal.

Creative Design we Assume!

Best of Luck

Sakai Openlife

I posted this information to another post and thought it may also be useful here.

.... Working within the frameworks and limitations we have is also important. Including that there isn't an unlimited supply of community regions nor funds to provide them.

This reply isn't particularly pointed at this post in specific, but it's important to read the 3 points in the Free Regions Program.

1. Community minded Project (Openlife and exterior).
2. Be an Active Participant in the OpenlifeGrid.
3. Considerate of these factors Promote participation OpenlifeGrid/ Showcase etc Interaction.

The 'community' we are talking about is the Openlife Residents, and to pulling non-residents into the world as new residents through common interests.

The 'active' part indicates this is not a set & forget website scenario, running a region can be quite a big task. Unlike the early website days, a 3D interacting environment needs regular update, new features, new interactions with the local 3D scene and with other Avatars.
This might seem small but likely will be quite a project as most multi-region managers in SL could vouch for, it can really be quite time consuming to have a 'successful' region.

The 3rd point says you need to make the region targeted at Openlife Users, it should be also possible to use as a showcase to the external world, provide inspiration to other region holders and obviously promote participation in the openlife to non-users.

With these points in mind some ideas may be better targeted at incorporation into an existing community region, or in the case of Not For Profits joining the upcoming Foundation Resident event.
This event is the cheapest way to get a region in world and achieve a 3D presence whist helping the openlife to bring a full time paid developer to the project.
Without going into too much detail and stealing the thunder of the new launch, becoming a Foundation Resident will cost $75 a month Limit of 4 Regions per resident, and includes voting rights for voteable issues.

I hope this explains well for users who wanted to know more.

Re: What is the Free Community Region Program?   (Ireland)

Just a quick question

For approved Community Projects there may be free hosting, but are there any fees to be paid regardless, such as for example Monthly Tier Fees (Like the $75 ones for Foundation Residents Regions

Tks

SouthEastern Australia Region Program   (Australia)

Hello Sakai,

An interesting proposal, but more details are needed.

What will it cost?  Any Tier involved, or are you happy to trade regional ownership for salesmanship in obtaining new residents?

I would like you to consider a region based on the Southeast of Oz.  Inclusive of the snowfields, emerald & sapphire coasts, perhaps into the ACT & surrounding rural areas.  ( Imagine modeling Canberra.. LOL)  I've had a bit of experience in DEM topography and I seems like a worthwhile undertaking to model the area.

This being a public region, how will you profit?  Will you allow land sales within the region? Will you take a percentage of the Sales?  What intellectual property rights would I retain as regional developer?  At some future time, would the region be movable to remote servers?  Basically, what's it gonna cost me to build you a region and what will I get out of it besides the satisfaction of presence?

Yes, yes.. a lot of things to think about ;-)

Cheers,   Rommel

Re: What is the Free Community Region Program?   (Italy)
Modified By Lapsus Mimir on 2/17/2008 11:31:18 PM)

Hello Sakai, it sounds great!

I bought a region, but I'd be also interested to be active in OpenLife in a free 'thematic' region.

I live also my second life, where my interest is to build an italian community with ppl interested on health, mental health, disbilities, and also arts (such as inworld) helping each other in building, in living their virtual life, and also better coming back to their First or 'Real' Life. I'll keep that second life, at least untill here we'll be able to really establish our Open life.

So, what could I do here? Not exactly the same things than in sl, nor (I'm wondering about) a 'national' community, such as an Italy Region, because I think that the best of open grids is to participate to an international context, to meet different ppl, speaking different languages, that means different cultures, experiences, sometimes also different dreams... and share them, avoiding to create closed islands with a single way to speak, thing, taste and so on.

So, maybe, I'd be interested to a place (it could be the region I bought and/or a free region) that give the possibility to ppl speaking different labguages than English, to learn (also languages) one from each other, and feel citizen of a world wide community

... possibly with health, psychology, society, anthropology, philosophy, arts interests to share.

If all this has a sense for you, I'd be happy to be helped building it in a way that communicate its goals.

Hi all

Re: What is the Free Community Region Program?   (Italy)

Is this project still alive?

if yes is it possible to discuss it better? I think that opensim and OL are (slowly) but firmly coming to a level where communities, free projects and noprofit can try to use actively, but need to be properly handled. Maybe if inworld groups are starting to work they can act as cohesive ways as they are working in sl.

I must have a look to the sources :)

Re: What is the Free Community Region Program?   (United States)

The OpenLife University concept is really starting to get some weight behind it (mine included), so its quite possible that it will be the next of many more community regions to come. I doubt Sakai would let such an integral part of OpenLife fall silent. After all, not everyone can afford a region, there has to be some content out there for the average shmuck like myself.
