Community Region Changes  (Australia)

This post should have been made earlier in advance and I apologise for not doing so, we'll make sure we put such changes up to a new community region section in future (which will be here this week).

We are in the process of re-evaluating the idea of Community Regions. Not to take them away, but to make them work properly the way they were intended.

So, we have started by moving a few regions. Looking at the current arrangements of Community Regions they are all in 'a strip'. We feel it would be better if we spread the community regions around the grid for better integration.

So Recent regions like Blueberry & Valencia have become Foundation Regions, and 2 other regions on the grid, >towards the west. Will become Community Regions.

No more changes will be happenning to the Lakes area which is now 3 community regions.

But it's likely we will make changes to 2 or 3 other regions such as strawberry, Pascal.

We understand many people would like to be involved in Community regions and I encourage you to reply to this post about things you think should be done to improve the program before it's re-launch in a week.

Kind Regards,

Sakai Openlife

Re: Community Region Changes  (Canada)

I think any community region first need to have a community present and willing to put in time to build it and make it interesting. So far, what I have seen is one or two people propose a community region, then "hope they will come" kind of attitude. In this early stage of OLG, I don't see how any community based project can function. First it takes a firm commitment to start and complete any kind of project. What makes a person persevere is incentive. Having a free region is certainly a nice incentive, but in order to keep the free region, some progress must be apparent, otherwise it's just another empty region.

Second, it take more than just an outline of the project to get people interested in joining a community project. There need to be at minimum a roadmap, or a list of solid proposal that will keep members busy for some time. Someone need to be appointed to make things happen.

I could have proposed a Zen buddhism community, but past experience in SL showed me that even when the goal is based on compassion and giving, nothing gets done unless someone stands up and starts building. Of course, once something is started, conflicting views arises and when handled incorrectly, everything stops. That is the reason I'm doing my project alone, I have a definite goal in mind and I can't spare the time convincing others to follow the same goal ;-)

The best way I've seen to make this work is to have a region subdivided into specific projects under a common theme. Each project is given a parcel. Those involved in each project have to submit a timeline and detailed description of what they will build. A committee approves each project. I've seen it work, somewhat, in SL on Bodhi island. They are now in an attempt to revive the project after it was left idle for months.

anyway, that was my feedback on this subject. Hope this help.

Re: Community Region Changes  (United States)

Hi have to agree here. I've been in numerous 'community' projects and have - sad to say - been left holding the bag. Since then, all the projects I've ever undertaken I've done myself and then invited the community to come and enjoy what I have done.

Yet, still then, I've found in SL that most people don't even care to come and take a look unless they can 'gain' something from it,or get 'free stuff'. *sigh*

For instance, last year Halloween, I turned my entire sim (previous to my island purchase) into a haunted theme for everyone that lived in the adjoining regions (10 in all) to come by and enjoy for free. I did the same thing for Christmas - turning my sim into a Winter Wonderland. Sadly - my traffic bots showed me that no one was even interested in coming to look. Heh - so much for trying to bring the community together, eh?

Well, that's a bit of my community endeavors.

Maybe it will be different here - I hope.

Pfft...yah...ok...if you say so.

Re: Community Region Changes  (United Kingdom)

I agree with both the above posts. People act with probably the best of intentions initially, however these projects need to be coordinated and have sufficient dedicated people to ensure that progress is made. To try to dedicate areas to community roles, especially for individual countries or languages at this stage is somewhat premature.

One thing that this particular group of regions created was a degree of bad feeling and heated debate; something which I grew tired of in SL and hoped not to find here. As Foundation Members we should all be prepared to step back and count to 10 before kicking and screaming. If the Founders argue and create bad feeling, then there isnt a lot of hope for community based projects succeeding.

Right now we should be building individual regions and recruiting new members. If you look at the current community regions......virtually no work has been done other than a few odd items placed....best intentions I am sure ..... but hardly a reason to leave them empty and unsold. OLG needs income as well as vision.

Re: Community Region Changes  (United Kingdom)

Great to read this Thread... I'm Certain that with some loose organisation, These "community" areas can be of real Benefit to OLG.

First and Foremost.... Each area must surely be aimed at being a Magnet for People's curiosity.

Then secondly, Should be attempting to Show off the Different Outlook and Experience that OLG is Attempting to Nurture (whatever that May eventually be?).

Perhaps a Team of Keen "Community" Contributors can be assembled... and unite in a Drive to realise a collection of Quality places.

I'm certainly at the beckon call of anyone with a Vision or current project in this Regard.

Cheers.

Gareth
