Openlife Founders and Ethics in Opensource Grids (vs Lindens) Feed-Back
Modified By Sakai Openlife on 7/15/2008 10:21:31 PM)

Hello, I was an Openlife Founder, since 02/15/2008, at least untill this yesterday message, I got from OpenlifeGrid.com

Your user account at Openlife Grid has been recently updated to restrict access to the following Openlife Role:

Role: Foundation Resident
Description: Openlife Foundation Resident Subscription.
These residents are Pioneers of the Openlife Grid owning a region of the mainland in the Foundation Resident Land Release.

Thank you, we appreciate your support...
Openlife Grid

What does it mean? I asked...

You probably received this email, as you are no longer hold a region in world. So it takes your Foundation Resident Status away...

That was the answer.

It's true! One month ago I paid my last 75$ (90+45+75 = 210$, now for a little, very little more, you become a true founder - for the same period !)

and I ABANDONED my region, Coffee/Campanella.

Yes, so, I didn't rent it, I didn't sell it. I consider myself someone that wanted to contribute to the foundation of an opensource grid, so...

My feed-back: Months of silence

About the big promises of the beguinning, about a lot of very good intentions expressed in so many posts on this forums (on how to use the grid, on how to share experiences, on how to let people walk, run, fly, sail too, from region to region), about the continuously updating of the servers, the openlifegrid.com web server included, (btw I tried 3 times to login here, today, before to success)

so about, also, how, when, and where to pay tiers!

No more mails, as at the beguinning, just some messages somewhere, or in the chat.

So

no mind if the grid was down, expecially when you'd like to show it to friends you spammed about in forums, blogs and emails (meantime, Lindens travel from LL to IBM opensource grid, maybe have they to book their visit some weeks before?)

no mind if, as a founder, I contributed, as many, many, many other to buy expensive hardware and pay hours and hours of (silent) work of the Openlifegrid.com

no mind if also when I wrote about my difficulty to continue to support this grid that silent way, I didn't got any answer

no mind it the same happened when I decided to definitely abandon my region

no mind if now the same region is sold for a very smaller amount, and tiers too are smaller than before

no mind of a lot of other little details

No mind.

But, the meaning of the word founder (I'm not anglophone, but I have some dictionaries) should be 'a guy that contributed to found, at the beguinning, now and later in the future - the time is past)

So, what minds is that I'm very hurted that a short message can delete me as .. such!

If this is the ethics of an opensource grid, I'm very sorry that this could happen. Since I still believe to the strong role of the Open Source (and LL too, as everyone can read on their blogs )

So

my feed-back is of a great enthusiasm, I found here, a great respect for the openlifegrid.com creator and owner, and, also, an increasing big flop

of all of this.

Maybe the openlife.com business is very fine, increasing and ok.

I'm not interested on.

So, maybe it's also better that my foundership will be soon forgotten. For ME, I mean.

Well, good bye to all people  here :))

Forgive my poor English :)

Bye :))))))))

Re: Openlife Founders and Ethics in Opensource Grids (vs Lindens) Feed-Back

hum... maybe there should be a new category of residents of OLG: Ex-Foundation residents.... of which the number will grow as life takes a turn for some of us... I did feel a tug when I received that same email. Though I understand the reason and agree with it, it would be nice that former foundation residents that did contribute in content or development, even for just a little while, get something attached to their title, just to show for posterity that we were there...

Whilst it is difficult to say what the solution here should be regarding this scenario we're very open to suggestions.

On one hand - Foundation Residents by definition are those who hold a region in the Mainland 'Alice'. It also add's additional function and access to areas on the website, relating to region ownership. These foundation residents are the ones that keep the Openlife here every month and growing from strength to strength.

However, sometimes circumstances change as above and it may not be possible to own a region any longer.

From my personal point of view I don't feel any less of the contribution you have made, as there are many ways to contribute both paid and free. ie Wiki, forums, open office meetings, community meetings, community regions etc. etc. It should be noted that from myself personally and I think on behalf of the Openlife Community your contribution has been welcomed and we all thankyou for being an early pioneer and hope that now you can continue in some of these other ways just mentioned.

So I can put forward perhaps a small solution when it becomes available.

?

What if... when the capability becomes available we ackowledge all residents early residents of the pre-completed Alice (the first mainland) status with some kind of group membership?

It's just a thought but perhaps it's one way we can acknowledge the very early pioneers of the Openlife?

Re:- the email - these are generated by the system when you no longer hold any regions in the Openlifegrid, as I mentioned earlier it relates to a role which provides additional access to particular region function areas so it's not possible for us to keep this role open.

Happy Openlife-ing !!

A group for ex-foundation residents would be nice. But what I miss the most is the blog access. While I'm no longer Foundation resident, my blog is still showing. But I have lost the ability to add to it. I still spend some time in a standalone and the blog here would be a convenient place to share what I'm building.

Why not have these people eternally designated as "Pioneers"? No matter what the status of these people currently, they were there at the beginning of time. It might be necessary to decide on a date or duration so that it is a little bit exclusive but why couldn't that be done?

Pioneers - I like that. It is true, during the American Westward expansion in the 19th century, many people headed West in search of wealth, freedom, space, etc.... "West" is a vector, not a destination and many of these good people settled along the way when circumstances changed. We wouldnt have St. Louis, Kansas City numerous other cities if it hadnt been for their hard work. Yes, I say forever honor these people as Pioneers and Veterans!

I can completely understand where you are coming from Lapsus, although I can also understand those who are not doing this for the recognition but rather for the love of making something great.

But...

It might be a good idea to have a founders corner or foundation residents section thet is indexed by search engines and available for public view for the ones who would like to put titles on their resumes as being a contributor to virtual world exploration. A simple list for now with their names and contact information as well as a blog for life...their free to set up anyway and don't take up much space. Heck, how about an OpenLife email address and a t-shirt ;-)
