Alternate Viewers - By Kirstenlee

Just thought I would mention something I found in R14 about prims over 10m, you can't scale them by mouse they stay at the default 10m max

Re: Alternate Viewers - By Kirstenlee
Sly, its a known issue.

the mouse control for editing prims was tacked on by LL after the regular editing had been established and doesnt use the same coding. Kirsten said that part was proving to be more of a challenge.

Other things that have come up....

Some people seemed to be unaware of the limitations of the various viewers. I'll try to sum it up here.

There are 3 main viewers that are actively being supported on OpenLifeGrid at the moment. They are Second Life (SL), RealXtend (Rex) and Kirstens (R13 or R14)...

The SLviewer cannot create a prim greater than 10 meters, Also the maximum ceiling for prims created with SL is 768 meters. If you try to edit a prim with the SL viewer that had previously been created with REX or R13/14, the prim will revert to 10m or descend to 768 meters.

The REX and the R13/14 viewers can create prims up to 100 meters on a side. They are not the same as "megaprims" in Second Life" In Second Life there were some basic prims created with a modified client and then saved and packaged before LL added hooks in the server code to suppress larger than 10 meter prims. Subsequently, others took the 13 or so large prims that had been created and tortured them to create a set of 100-150 building blocks known as "megaprims" These prims are known to cause some issues with physics in Second Life as the original havok physics engine wasnt designed to handle collisions on surfaces that large.

We don't have those issues in OpenLife....

Prims can be be much larger in OpenLifeGrid and they mesh well with the physics engine with no known issues or drawbacks.

Kiresten's R13/14 also has enhanced the hollows parameters, allowing hollows up to 99% instead of 95%. Neither Rex nor SL has caught up with this change yet.

There is still another limitation between REX and R13/14.... REX currently has the 768 meter ceiling though there have been requests to remove this. Hopefully in further versions, REX and Kirstens viewer will standardize on a set of viewer modifications that are transparent between these enhanced viewers.

if you see Kirsten in-world, run up and give her a big hug for all the effort she has contributed!

Just to note that I only use the modified Cool SL Viewer as it's the only one that works in my KUbuntu Linux. I don't like using Windows and Kirsten's and Rex only work there.

Nick Beresford has the mods here at the Cool SL Viewer. There is windows versions too. It can make big prims with no problems among other features.

I haven't even tried to go above 350m so don't know about height. I'd guess it's all good there too.

And I'll thank Kirsten even though I don't use it. Thanks Kirsten for getting involved.

Re: Alternate Viewers - By Kirstenlee

Actually, I think the sizing issue has more to do with the latest batch of server upgrades.  When I noticed the problem in R14, I rolled back to R13 since resizing beyond 10m had always worked in it for me, but lo and behold, the same behavior persisted.  This is gonna slow me down a bit :(

What kind of issues? I have built with both R13 and R14 and routinely build extremely large structures without issue. As far as I know, you have never been able to resize with the mouse beyond 10meters with Kirsten's viewer. I never use the mouse to resize though. I have always thought that to be imprecise. I always use the grid and the edit dialog box.

Before the latest server upgrades, I was always able to size with the mouse past 10m...  With snap to grid on, it makes building large, precise structures quickly much much easily.
