I am surprised by the personal tone of some of this discussion. I know two of the principals involved and it seems uncharacteristic of them. Please, no more venom in the mixmaster in the morning.
During a recent chatroom discussion about copyright, especially pertaining to textures, I was referred to: http://slnn.com/index.php?SCREEN=article&about=when-rightful-ip
Oddly, this was a case of "chance favoring the prepared mind" because I have been recently thinking through what I will need in order to rebuild in OL. Most important are high quality international flora textures: trees, bushes, flowers, etc. So, having learned about her from the article, I im'ed Vryl in SL and she prepared a revised license for me so I could use her collections in OL as well. She referred me to another interesting article: http://slnn.com/index.php?SCREEN=article&about=big-paw-paw&page=1
Now, I am perhaps one of the least qualified people you will ever meet to weigh in on money, marketing, and commerce but it seemed to me from those two articles that Vryl had her head screwed on straight about both copyright and adfarms. In addition, she's a vendor. She struck me as someone who might be a valuable voice in the OL community even though there is presently no economy, which I made completely clear to her. I strongly encouraged her to visit OL and contact Sakai as early as possible. I then happily began playing with my new textures.
...well, until Vryl contacted me today about this Thread.
Again, bearing in mind my complete incompetence and ignorance on the subject, I think an "economy" will exist, whether it be in-world, bridged to the outside, or barter. Each and every one of them will involve problems. Each and every one of them will involve advertising. The important thing for OL is to embrace the "economy" in such a way that the spirit of community on which it is based is preserved and strengthed. It helps now to have a critical and respectful discussion while we have the opportunity to do so. But remember that the most important thing to do right now is to support OL and especially Sakai in establishing grid-stability.
I sometimes wonder if it would be possible to modify the code so one could simply select neighbors' objects and make them invisible to oneself. That single feature would address so many problems.
BTW, love all these quotes. One of my favs is Dostoyevsky's: "The cleverest of all, in my opinion, is the man who calls himself a fool at least once a month."
