Feedback to the New REX VIEWER
Modified By Sakai Openlife on 6/30/2008 12:55:57 AM)

Hello Hello,

So ,i've tested the new Rex viewer now for some time and what i can say that a good thing is the avatar generator.

That seems to be a look into the future .

But when it comes to the overall functionallity of the viewer it hasent' much improved compared the last version.

The rendering of the landscape  terrain is not very nice and it sems to be impossible to delete the fog.

Flying is very flaky and stops abrupt and goes on again not very nice. This comes with an unpleasent flickering of the sound.

There seems to be also a problem with proper and fast loading of objects and textures from the server.

Many prims are missing and textures take long time to load.In Rex mode 1 time not even 1 prim could be seen in my region.

And last ....its crashing very very often.

So atm resuming .... i have only 1 positive point about  the test release and this is the avi generator .This really looks like fun.

For all the rest   ie. functionallity on the grid its far far away from being usable.

Bodhi

The REX viewer didnt have most of those glitches to me, and should know, i was there when you tested it ;)

The av generator really is great, it takes up the whole rendering screen, but that doesn't matter much as long as it's integrated in the viewer. The perfect generator would be inside a little window, but that would mean integrating issues between the SL and OGRE renderer, so i would suggest for the rex team to not do anything about it until they make their fully own viewer. As for bugs, the only one i could find was that that both the SL and OGRE renderer started getting very distorted after switching through both modes too many times. I like the room you guys left for the OpenLife GAS and Beta grids there, a nice hint for the future updates:)

Also, the "rendering of the landscape  terrain is not very nice" because the terrain is not being textured with sim's destined textures, just with one other texture. I know the OGRE engine, it has a special system called a "terrain scene manager", which loads terrain from a heightmap and textures it real fast, plus auto-optimizes its' geometry depending on the camera position to increase rendering speed.

And yes, it does crash very often... i suspect this has to do with the fact that its coupled with the SL renderer, and because it can't use DirectX rendering just yet (devs reported a 50% increase in performance in a very early DirectX test).

The IK movement generator and using OGRE animations is a great feature too, but i could only get it to work on a standalone server, not OpenLife.

Re: Feedback to the New REX VIEWER

Hello Everybody !

Is the release version (v0.3) NOT crashing constantly for anybody who is trying it ?  For me it's really terrible, I've never seen a viewer that bad before. It happens in tribalnet as well as regular SL, I haven't gotten a v0.3 server up and running yet.

I also noticed that some of the svn versions immediately prior to the last version were better as far as crashing, roughly rev 467.

I've been trying to open the viewer in the visual c++ debugger and I'm having problems with that also, it goes alot further before crashing when you don't try to debug.

Hi, Doug! :-)  I've had *some* good luck with the new OLG ReX.  Following a few sessions with positive results, Charm and two other alts now *do* crash to desktop in OLG upon Connecting to Region with OLG ReX 3.0, BUT one new alt has been able to get inworld to OLG now for several sessions, switch to ReX view, use the Avatar Generator and SOMEHOW it saved her gender, hair, and Avatar Generator attire.  You can see my efforts and successes in my Flickr piccies at charmainesland

It's also narrated in my first-ever region blog entries! LOL.  I haven't tried playing with IK.  I *did* import the rabbit mesh into one of my OLG-flavored Ready to Run Standalones!  I also noted there *some* black upon a hill I tried to terraform.  I *do* know there's some issues with Nvidia graphics card driver files.  Mine may be sufficiently "old" enough to not create the problems some of the new versions of the graphics card drivers are giving.  I also know that once you get *into* ReX mode, you're better off coming back out into SL mode before logging off.  If you don't, I've heard that can sometimes cause problems.

Just thought I'd mention what I'd experienced :-)

Re: Feedback to the New REX VIEWER

By the way, if it closes on "Connecting to Region", it means you need to clear the cache first. Am i the only one who reads the readme files? :P The avatar generator saves the last appearance everytime, no matter if you can export it or not. The IK thing is pretty cool, but it works only on a pure REX server, not openlife... The interface is kinda rudimentary, and can use only 4 preset IK points (the arms and legs... those only work on humanoid avatars), but its still an awesome idea to be able to make any animation inworld with them.

Re: Feedback to the New REX VIEWER

Yes I think it's important to note this viewer is a good proof-in-concept. It is only version 0.3 and many features are note yet merged into Openlife at this time. However we will be working on merging more of our own code with RealXtend and vice versa over coming months. (Starting today). We'll have more information on this project and how you can be involved (if you are a developer or just want to be a bug tester).

Hence in the openlife ReX version you can see 2 new links. LoginGrid GAS & Openlife Beta.

LoginGrid GAS -> This is for when we move to Avatar 2.0 in the main Openlife GRID (the one we all use now).

Openlife Beta -> This is to be a new mini-grid for testing the code as we move forward with the merge etc.

I guess there's a little news in this reply as well for those who hadn't heard it. I do encourage you though if you're interested in how we are changing etc to attend the Weekend Office hour in region Borne (see events for more info including times).

Just a quick note -> It would still appear the best viewer at present is R14 and R13 for Openlife.

Kind Regards,
