Standalone access from the internet and the server machine

Hi,

I'm trying to get a standalone to allow access from the Internet and from the machine hosting the grid at the same time but having trouble.  I am running Windows XP and am behind a Westell DSL router/modem.  I got it running locally without any effort, but when i changed the external_host_name setting in the default.xml file, it allowed my friend to access it over the Internet but blocked me from accessing it from the host machine.  I don't have another machine so I'd like to get this working if possible.  Any way to change windows or the config files to allow access from the Internet and from the host machine at the same time?  Thanks.

Have you tried using the same access method you gave your friend? That would be my first guess.

Re: Standalone access from the internet and the server machine

Not sure what you mean.  Let me explain in more detail what happened.  After i forwarded port 9000 on my routers firewall, she was able to connect but kept gettting an error when it tried to establish the handshake.  At this time I was able to log in from the same machine the grid was running on.  I hadn't changed any settings.  I then changed allow_alternate_ports to true and changed external_host_name to my ip address in default.xml in the regions folder and then she could log in across the internet but now I got the handshake failure locally.  I've read all of the posts relating to this but my networking skills are very rusty and I am not even sure if it's possible to have it set up to allow remote users and someone on the grid machine to log in at the same time.  I would use another PC on my LAN if i had one but the one running the grid is my only machine.  I would appreciate it if someone could tell me if this is possible.  Thanks.

Tried that and got the "something unexpected has gone wrong" message.  I found this page: http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Configuration.  It shows how to connect from the host machine or another machine but doesn't mention if both are possible at once.
