Hi! There didn't seem to be any way of adding to the thread that was already here about connecting to the OpenLife Grid with the Mac, so I thought I'd put that information here.

If you want to connect with a Mac, right click (or Control click with a one-button mouse) on the Second Life icon, and choose "Open Package Contents" from the drop down menu.

In the window that opens when you do that, open the Contents folder, and then the Resources folder. (NOT the MacOS folder.)

Inside the Resources folder you'll find (among many other things,) a document called "arguments.txt"

Open that document in TextEdit (or any other word processor.) It might have things in it, or it may be completely blank. It doesn't matter.

Paste this line in, under anything that's there.

-loginuri http://logingrid.net:8002/

Save and close. Close any open folder windows. (Just to keep things tidy.)

Now, when you double click that Second Life icon, you will connect to the OpenLife grid.

(You might want to change the name under that icon to something like "OpenLife", just to avoid confusion. You can safely do so; it won't affect your ability to log in.)

Just thought this might be helpful to other Mac users!

Re: How to - Get Connected to the Openlife Grid  (Australia)

The URI in the Linux details are incorrect. You've put http://opengrid.com instead of http://logingrid.net.

The details should look something like this:

secondlife -loginuri http://logingrid.net:8002/

Get quotes to stick in vista.  (Australia)

I can't get the "quotes" to stick when making a shortcut in vista.

Make new shortcut, copy what I wrote in notepad and paste in. Quotes dissappear when hit apply or close.

Is this a bug or a feature? Can you get yours to stick and how?

And ya cant paste into the command window or go back to pevious commands, it fails anyway.

Btw. I rarely visit the winows login these days. And why? . The way it operates is still win95, turn off the shiney and it seems not a single new feature is apparent. As far as useability is concerned anyway, it's so 20th century. (my opinion only as I'm all alone on this issue.)

Working towards a red dot. It's all I have for now. [and no, I couldn't just leave]

Re: How to - Get Connected to the Openlife Grid  (New Zealand)

My experience of attempting to join...

And as background, I am a daily user of SL; I own a Sim and run an active community of nearly 400 members.

I registered.. so far so good;

Then I was taken to the Avatar toolbox..   not very clear…  I clicked on First name; attempted to type name, and eventually clicked on Add Avatar

Created my ava.. now what?  Nothing...  add another Ava?  no.

The sign up isn’t intuitive.. lead be my hand people..  I spent 10 minutes groping around looking for the front door…

Went to the wiki page.. page down.

Then I clicked on downloads tab  and came across :

The Current Version of Ready to Run Simulator is Version 0.5 rev r3274

Download Link: http://dl1.openlifegrid.com/RTR0.5/Opensim_Standalone_0_5_r3274.zip

*Follow instructions Provided in the .pdf file or follow the wiki.

.pdf file?  Where?

You need a customer service dude to look at all this.. very messy so far.

I then clicked on the .zip file.. dialogue box popped up… and then nothing…  so I clicked again..  thinking…

I am still not sure whether this is the way to access the OPenLIfe Grid is via this Simulator..?

Now been at it 15 mins….

Nothing appears so I return to the home page

Click on Forums.. and 'Getting started Help'

There I find the following from Sakai:

Assuming you already have the secondlife client. Available from www.secondlife.com

Connecting with Windows:

Create a new shortcut, choose the secondlife.exe as the target and add
-loginuri http://logingrid.net:8002

After creating your new shortcut with the extra written above, if you were to check the target of the shortcut it should look something like this.

"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -loginuri http://logingrid.net:8002/

Please note logingrid.net is the Openlife Grid login url.

See example image .

Connecting with MAC:

/Applications/Second\ Life.app/Contents/MacOS/Second\ Life -loginuri http://logingrid.net:8002/

Connecting with Linux:

secondlife -loginuri http://openlifegrid.com:8002/

**. Alternatively If you are a Windows User may go to the downloads section, download & unzip & run 'Launcher' this select openlife and it will start your secondlife viewer automatically and connect you to the Openlife.

Huh?

Ahh.. the zip file just opened.. so I am extracting….

Extraction completed... window open.. now what?

I give up.

30 minutes... and still not in the grid.

Re: How to - Get Connected to the Openlife Grid  (United States)

Mark,

Are you trying to run a standalone or login to the OpenLife grid?  This is a grid connection forum so I'm assuming that you're trying to login and not set up a standalone.

You add the -loginuri http://openlifegrid.com:8002 to your new or copied SL or SL compatible client.  You should then be able to login to the OL grid with the credentials you signed up with  or...

In the Avatar Toolbox you can create a new avatar using any name you like, set your home login location, and reset your password.

Re: How to - Get Connected to the Openlife Grid  (United Kingdom)

I'm having much the same experience as Mark... wiki pages and links from the main page missing, contradictory instructions and general frustration. I've been in SL for 18 months or so, and have run multiple alts from the same machine with few problems.

So far...

I've registered, obviously or I wouldn't be posting here.

Created an avatar on the avatar toolbox page, and added a password.

Created a new SL viewer shortcut and appended  -loginuri http://logingrid.net:8002 to the target.

Ran the viewer and tried to log with my avatar name & password. After a few minutes wait I got "unable to connect" message.

Tried a few more times using different clients (Nicholaz BE-v, SL 1.18.5.3) with the same result.

Re: How to - Get Connected to the Openlife Grid  (Australia)

G'day Mark,

Yes its still in its infancy but its getting there. You sound like you have done everything right. It took a day for it to work on my PC, not sure why ! But the next day when I logged in, it was a happy vegimite and allowed me land on one of the islands.

Please note that Sakai is currently transfering some of the Regions to new servers , this could cause a few hicupswith logins. I have a feeling that a clear cache might be the answer to that issue, as we are effectively downloading info from another server location.

Hi, OL-Newbie here-)

It looks like Mark is trying to do both of these things by trying to connect to OL *using* the standalone. That would be a drastic misunderstanding. I was able to log in very quickly, even have my own nifty launcher on the desktop.

Ahaa!! *New or copied SL*. This information is very essential, because it could explain my constant crashes and not being able to do anything. I'm using the *same* Linux client for both SL and OL. See, I am well able to log in, but once I do something drastic, like moving the mouse, my avatar crashes right out of the box with her digital protein splatters messing up my CD-drive:-))

It could also explain why going into SL becomes unstable after having logged into OL with the same client.

I had no idea that I must use two *separate* clients for both SL and OL, thats like having two Firefoxes for accessing different webpages. It would be important to point this out in the wiki.

Ah, good to know, I was wondering why I'm not able to change anything on my ava.
